MiM at UCF Welcomes First Guest Speaker

The fall semester is in full swing and MiM at UCF welcomed their first guest speaker of the semester, Mujeres in Marketing VP Luana Ortiz! Luana lead an insightful talk on planting seeds for success, helping to introduce UCF students to the dynamic field of marketing & communications.

“Mujeres in Marketing was founded with the desire to create and build a community by and for Latina creatives.” Said MiM VP Luana Ortiz. “It is so important to network and build relationships throughout your career, especially when you’re starting out. Having the opportunity to connect with UCF students and introduce them to careers in creative fields while they are still in school and exploring their options is so incredibly important, especially when Latinas are still such an underrepresented minority in the field. Through our first student chapter, we’re creating the support systems we wished we had not only as students, but throughout every stage of our careers and that is the beauty of the work we are doing with Mujeres in Marketing.”

Latina Equal Pay Day: The Urgent Case for Equity

Today marks Latina Equal Pay Day which reminds us just how far into the year Latinas must work to earn what white, non-Hispanic men made the year before. According to the National Women’s Law Center, Latinas working full time and year round make about 58 cents for every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic men. When part-time and seasonal workers are included, that number drops to 51 to 54 cents.

Over a lifetime, that pay gap adds up to more than 1.3 million dollars in lost wages for the average Latina worker. In a single year, it amounts to about 32,000 dollars less than white men earn for similar work.

Education doesn’t fix the gap either. Even among college graduates, Latinas earn only 59 cents for every dollar earned by white men with the same level of education. These disparities don’t just affect individuals, they ripple through families and communities.
